Abstract: The presentation concerns the estimation of the vocal tract length of a speaker on the base of her formant frequencies and the formant frequencies and known tract length of a reference speaker. The length prediction is founded on a rule inferred from Webster’s equation that describes the propagation of a planar acoustic wave in a loss-less vocal tract. The length prediction experiments have been crosslanguage, cross-gender and cross-corpora. Results show that the relative length prediction error is less than 3%, which is inferior to the error made assuming typical tract lengths of 15 and 17 cm for male and female speakers respectively.

Estimation of vocal-tract shape from speech spectrum and speech resynthesis based on a generative model

Precise control of articulatory parameters is difficult and prevents a physical model from generating natural sounding speech signals. To determine vocal-tract shape from speech, this paper presents an inversion method for simultaneously estimating the cross-sectional area and length of the vocal tract. In addition, we performed speech resynthesis from a time-series of estimated vocal-tract sha...

On instantaneous vocal tract length estimation from formant frequencies

The length of the vocal tract and its relationship with formant frequencies is examined at fine temporal scales with the goal of providing accurate estimates of vocal tract length from acoustics on a spectrum-by-spectrum basis despite unknown articulatory information. Accurate vocal tract length estimation is motivated by applications to speaker normalization and biometrics. Analyses presented ...

On Short-Time Estimation of Vocal Tract Length from Formant Frequencies

Vocal tract length is highly variable across speakers and determines many aspects of the acoustic speech signal, making it an essential parameter to consider for explaining behavioral variability. A method for accurate estimation of vocal tract length from formant frequencies would afford normalization of interspeaker variability and facilitate acoustic comparisons across speakers. A framework ...

Rapid vocal tract length normalization using maximum likelihood estimation

Recently, vocal tract length normalization (VTLN) techniques have been developed for speaker normalization in speech recognition. This paper proposes a new VTLN method, in which the vocal tract length is normalized in the cepstrum space by means of linear mapping whose parameter is derived using maximumlikelihood estimation. The computational costs of this method are much lower than that of suc...

Adaptation and normalization experiments in speech recognition for 4 to 8 year old children

An experimental offline investigation of the performance of connected digits recognition was performed on children in the age range four to eight years. Poor performance using adult models was improved significantly by adaptation and vocal tract length normalisation but not to the same level as training on children. Age dependent models were tried with limited advantage. A combined adult and ch...
